There are some houses that are hard to find the words to describe. Some houses are different in so many ways that you cannot compare them to what came before. Shuniya is one of those houses. The term “Shuniya” finds its origins in the Sanskrit word for nothingness. The point of stillness in which your clearest intuition and your highest potential can be found. This home embodies the idea of Shuniya with an emphasis on peaceful, open spaces and free-flowing transitions throughout. From the moment you enter, you feel surrounded by light and elegance.
The first space you will come to is perhaps my favorite. Although understated, and tucked away in the center of the house, the courtyard is filled with radiance and nature. With a modest seating area focused in the center of the courtyard, and egress allowing access to the rest of the house surrounding the perimeter, this space creates the perfect crossroads for the perfect house.
As soon as you step foot in the expansive great room you are greeted with floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall, absolutely unobstructed views of the pacific coast of Costa Rica and the surrounding mountain tops. The large living area is the ultimate space for hosting. With enough room for retreats, yet a cozy enough feeling for families, this space is built for entertaining, no matter the audience. A large kitchen and a 14-person dining table set the stage for culinary excellence. The sunken living room provides a cozy seating area for socializing and relaxing. All of which is of course directly connected to the outdoor pool area. The large glass doors can be opened enough to bring these spaces together for a seamless transition between pool, play, peace, and if so desired, party. Cool ocean breezes, year around sunsets, and unforgettable moments are to be expected.
Moving around the perimeter of the courtyard you will come to a large media room that is perfect for meetings, presentations, classes, or movies. On this same level, you will also find 3 large bedrooms, all equipped with their own ensuite bathrooms and semi-outdoor showers. Each bedroom has ample closet space and a large openable glass door that can bring you outside.
Before heading upstairs you can find an additional seating area with built-in planters and a perfect space for morning coffee and smoothies. At the top of the stairs, you will find 2 more living spaces, one of which is covered by a gorgeous teak ceiling, and the other open to the midnight stars above. On this second level, you have an additional 2 master-bedroom suites with ensuite bathrooms, large closets, and outdoor terraces. The main house is fit with absolutely everything your heart desires but if you are looking for your own personal space, then don’t worry, Shuniya features its very own guest house.
Located below the main house, the guest house (or owner’s house depending on your needs), is plenty large enough for a small family to live in comfortably. The common room features an open kitchen and living area. There is also a bunk bedroom located adjacent. Upstairs, you can find the large master bedroom and private office area. This master is perhaps the nicest of all. With a spacious walk-in closet, bathroom, and open bathtub/shower area, you can feel rest assured that pampering yourself in your own private space has never felt so nice.
One could ramble on forever talking about the charm and elegance of this masterpiece of a home, but there is no way to truly appreciate it unless you see it for yourself.
